Shooting investigated
EAST LIVERPOOL- After a manhunt, East Liverpool police officers located and took into custody the suspect in a fatal shooting Thursday night.
The department received a call of a shooting at approximately 6:25 p.m., at the Woodland Hills Apartments at Eutaw and Montrose streets.
According to Chief John Lane, officers arrived at the scene and found one victim with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Witnesses reported that the suspect fled in a vehicle, so officers started interviews to gather information and started following leads.
While following up on leads, officers received a tip from the public that the suspect identified as Daniel Whitely was at a house on Avondale Street.
Lane said immediately officers headed in that direction. Officer Justin Watkins arrived first and started to knock on the door. Whitley was located hiding under a porch between the houses under a porch and was taken into custody without incident at approximately 9:48 p.m.
“He was brought to the station,” Lane said. “The suspect is in custody and no longer a threat to the public.”
Lane also noted they are currently following up on the investigation and more information could be released as the investigation continues. The
Lane is waiting for confirmation that the victim’s family has been notified before he releases the victim’s name.
Lane said Whitley has not yet been charged but will probably end up being charged with homicide since the victim didn’t make it. The Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office was at the scene and trying to figure out what charges to hold him on.
According to Lane it wasn’t an active shooter situation as initially suspected but a lover’s triangle situation, The shooter was the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s girlfriend.
