Wellsville kindergarten registration off to a great start
WELLSVILLE — Garfield Elementary School Principal Shelbie Householder told the Wellsville Board of Education during Monday’s meeting that kindergarten registration is off to a great start and the FinalForms availability has been a convenience for families registering their children.
The all-day preschool program has been filled and spots for the a.m./p.m. half day programs are quickly filling up. Interested families should contact the school by the end of May.
Garfield Elementary will have a planned two-hour early release day for teacher professional development and plan for the upcoming school year.
The NWEA MAP Spring Assessments will take place April 28 through May 16.
“We are hopeful for great growth in all areas,” Householder said. “Both teachers and students are working hard to meet their expected individual growth. This spring growth data will give us an idea of changes that need to be made academically for the upcoming school year to better serve our students.”
There are multiple events planned for Garfield Elementary such as fun day, a field day, the end-of-year awards assembly, preschool graduation and a Kindergarten Mayday.
Garfield Elementary Students of the Month for April are Harley Greathouse and Makennah Williams, both first graders.
Daw Elementary School Principal Erin Clemmer was not able to attend the meeting but sent a report to be presented. In her report Clemmer noted the school is in the middle of testing season with third- and sixth-grade students taking tests this week. Attendance has been great with very few makeups. The school is working to keep things as structured and consistent as possible with very little distractions until testing is completed.
Clemmer said the school is looking forward to the art show, a collaboration between the visual arts and music departments this week.
There will be a staff in-service day on April 28 to focus on content areas. The Daw and Garfield ELA departments will meet together, and all math, science, and social studies teachers will work on vertical alignment of standards.
Daw Students of the Month for April are fifth-graders Tate Simms, Julianna Reese, and Mika Custer.
Jr. Sr. High School Principal Richard Schilling thanked teachers Nicole Camilletti and Christine Wilson for their efforts and hard work on the prom, which he said was very nice with students having a great time.
The high school started its second week of testing.
The 3.75 and National Honor Society recognition is scheduled for May 12 in the auditoria. The seventh and eighth grade academic awards will be May 13 and the Washington D.C. trip will be May 14-15.
Alice and Wonderland Musical performances will be this Friday through Sunday.
Spring Fling for the ninth- through 12th-grade students will be May 9.
Due to spring break the high school students of the month are still being declared.
Magna Cum Laude students are Lillian Crooms, Gracie Dowling, Rorie Hager Isabella Vallera. Cum Laude students are Keely Daniels, Olivia Edison, Myleigh Jackson and Kimberlee Nally.
During the new business portion of the meeting the board approved donations, field trips and the second reading for NEOLA policies.
Monetary donations were approved and accepted from Emilee Wilson in the amount of $40 for the high school MH Class; the Garfield Principal’s Fund for the Scholastic Book Fair in the amount of $3,000.42; The Baseball Boosters for the high school baseball team in the amount of $1,099.94; the Wellsville Teachers’ Association for the choir and the Thespian’s high school play in the amounts of $250 and $500; and the Wellsville Arts Club for Ebony and Ivory in the amount of $100/
Approved field trips include the first-grade class to Oglebay Zoo on May 8, with staff chaperones Alicia Hackney, Emily Miller, Jessica Giannone, Randi Wolfe and Lori Drago; and the Wellsville High School Band to Kennywood Park on May 10 with staff chaperone Matt Ohlin.
During the finance portion of the meeting, the board approved the treasurer’s report including the financial report, transfer and modifications of funds and Then and Now certificates as presented to them.
They also approved dock days for Tammy Muschweck for March 13 and 18; a service agreement with Columbiana County ESC services for 2025-2026; the Medicaid School Program (MSP) Cost Review for fiscal years 2026-2027; and the renewal of the cyber liability policy through McBane Insurance and Financial services for Fiscal Year 2026.
For personnel, the board approved multiple coaches, certified substitutes, non-renewal of all certificated and non-certificated 2020-2025 substitutes and non-renewal for athletic and classified supplemental contract at the end of their current contract seasons.
The board also approved 15 teacher limited contract renewals to be effective for the 2025-2026 school year; purchased service contracts for an attendance coordinator; a LPN contract renewal and four continuing contracts.
The Wellsville High School commencement ceremony will be held at 8 p.m May 29 at Nicholson Stadium, 1806 Danbury Ave.
The Wellsville Board of Education meets the third Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Media Center at Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School, 1 Bengal Drive, Wellsville. The next regular meeting is scheduled for May 19.
