New Cumberland going to Whoville for Christmas

NEW CUMBERLAND – This year’s New Cumberland Christmas Parade is promising to be a “Whobilation” of the holidays.

The New Cumberland Festival and Parade Committee will hold the community’s annual Christmas Parade on Dec. 14, with a theme of “Whoville,” inspired by the literary creations of Dr. Seuss.

Notifications have been sent to various businesses, school groups, and church and civic organizations in the community, inviting them to take part.

“The letters went out,” said Police Chief Lester Skinner, who also is part of the festival committee. “Everything is moving ahead.”

Lineup for the parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Marshall Street, with the parade stepping off at 5 p.m., and following its traditional route along Ridge Avenue, into the city’s downtown area, and ending at the New Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department.

Following the parade, the community is invited to come together on River Avenue for refreshments, performances by the Oak Glen High School band and chorus, and a visit from Santa Claus.

For more information, or to reserve a spot in the parade, contact Skinner at 304-670-4108, or Tammy Jenkins at 304-491-9793.

Reservations are due by Dec. 10.

In addition to the parade festivities, on Dec. 14, beginning at 10 a.m., the New Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department will host its Merry Market, featuring a variety of local vendors.
