Thompson House event to benefit historical group

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Historical 1876 Thompson House in East Liverpool is hosting a fundraising event Oct. 22 when Timothy Brookes, recently retired attorney and head of the East Liverpool Historical Society, attempts to spend the night in the haunted Victorian mansion.

“The Ghost and Mr. Chicken,” a cult classic staring Don Knotts whose character must spend the night in a reportedly haunted mansion eerily similar in many ways to the Thompson House, will be shown to a limited number of guests. The event is being sponsored in part by the Glenmoor Italo’s Pizza, Chicken, Subs & Pasta Restaurant. Dinner and a tour of the 146-year-old mansion located downtown at 305 Walnut St. will also be featured. All proceeds raised for this charitable organization will go to the maintenance and upkeep of the property which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house was built by pottery magnate Cassius Clark Thompson, who owned and operated the C.C. Thompson Pottery in East Liverpool. Cassius and his wife, Elizabeth, had a little girl before moving into their new home right before Christmas 1876. Sarah “Sadie” Ida Thompson was born on Oct. 12, 1873 and passed away in the newly constructed house on Dec. 31, 1876 after a 24-hour bout with Scarlet fever.

Is it her spirit that creates some occasional mischief there? Sponsor Brookes to spend the night in the house alone with no more than a sleeping bag and a flashlight, per the character in the movie, to find out.

Send a check to the East Liverpool Historical Society at P.O. Box 476, East Liverpool, OH 43920 marked “chicken” in the memo, or donate through Venmo with username @Thompson-House-1876.

Additional viewings may be added, and updates will be listed on their Facebook site, The Historical 1876 Thompson House of East Liverpool, Ohio.
