Details released in Tuesday night shooting

WEIRTON — The name of the individual shot in the Kings Creek area Tuesday night has been released, as the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department continues its investigation.

According to information made available Thursday afternoon, John Chipps Sr., 66, was shot in the back while pulling into his driveway at 622 Kings Creek Road, Weirton. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the address at 11:39 p.m. Tuesday, assisted by officers from the Weirton Police Department.

Chipps was transported to a Pittsburgh area hospital. His condition has not been released by officials.

The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation, noting it is believed Chipps was the intended target of the shooting. A suspect has not been named, with officials reporting the shooter had left the area before responding officers arrived on the scene.
