Wellsville Community Foundation takes ownership of historic church

WELLSVILLE — On Oct. 13, the Wellsville Historical Society transferred ownership of the Church of the Ascension, a historical part of the village needing rehabilitation, to the newly formed Wellsville Community Foundation.

The church dates back to 1870 when the town of Wellsville enjoyed a commanding railroad presence. It has not been used as a place of worship for nearly five decades and has not been open to the public for almost as long.

In the 1980s a small group of concerned residents which included a couple former parishioners formed “Friends of the Ascension Church” to take ownership and rescue the church from falling into total disrepair. A few years ago, the group transferred ownership to the Historical Society.

The church is in need of major upgrades which include heat and plumbing. Plans are underway to secure funding. The Foundation’s vision is that the church be used as a viable and vibrant community space for accessible cultural activities.

Those desiring to contribute to the physical needs of this project, please reach out to the foundation through their website, or send donations to the Wellsville Community Foundation at P.O. Box 342. Donations are also welcomed online at www.wellsvillecommunitiyfoundation.org.

The Wellsville Community Foundation is a 501C3 organization.
