CCRTA meets

Local author and contributor to The East Liverpool Review, Fred Miller, provided the program for the most recent Columbiana County Retired Teachers’ Association meeting. Miller likes to poke fun at individuals with gentle humor that nobody minds. His books are entitled: “Worschrag, Shark and Seed” and “Falling Out of Honey’s Spell.” Here he is pictured with a camera that use to be popular with reporters. (Submitted photo)

Loretta Davidson welcomed the members of the Columbiana County Retired Teachers’ Association and led the opening agenda. Lunch was served by The Lisbon First United Methodist Women. Twenty-nine members and four guests were present.

Jerry Barnes conducted the business meeting. The treasurer’s report and minutes were accepted. The membership voted to continue offering three $250 grants to teachers who are actively teaching in the county. Applications are available through the local public school superintendents. Carol Kinsey, Northeast Regional STRS representative, offered a legislative update.

The program was presented by Fred Miller, a local humorous and satirical writer who has published two books and is a contributing columnist to The East Liverpool Review. He patterns his writings after the late Art Buchwald. Miller’s writings are done in first person and usually about his family or East Liverpool.

Glenn Wollam won the 50/50.

Next meeting will be at noon Oct. 21 at the Lisbon First United Methodist Church. Any retired teacher who lives or teaches in Columbiana County is welcome to come. Contact Jerry Barnes at 330-385-5560, membership chairperson, for information.
