Lisbon school board welcomes international exchange students

LISBON–Board of Education members along with Superintendent Joe Siefke welcomed international exchange students Lucas Barbosa from Brazil and Alexa Wichmann from Germany.

Barbosa has enjoyed playing football and forming new friendships while Wichmann has enjoyed multiple academic opportunities.

In other business, according to Treasurer Vickie Browning-Prowitt the district has been applying for a multitude of new grants including workers compensation school safety grants, equipment grants and American Recovery grants.

Regarding after school services, Siefke discussed the implementation of a tutoring program for students who are behind.

“I think it will be beneficial. I think it will be exactly what the kids need.” Siefke said.

The after school tutoring program will target four different grade levels.

Regarding events, McKinley Elementary principal Daniel Kemats reported students at the elementary celebrated 1950’s day on September 17 in remembrance of the schools 70th anniversary.

Students had cake in the cafeteria to commemorate the school’s anniversary.

In other news, Lisbon Exempted Village Board of Education accepted two donations Thursday evening.

An anonymous donor contributed $300 to cover student lunches, coats, hats or gloves for students in need throughout the district.

Methodist Church Food Pantry contributed $500. The food donation allows the sophomore class to start the concession stand.

“We appreciate the donations and we have sent thank you cards,” Siefke remarked.

An in-service day is scheduled on October 1. Staff will have conversations about interpreting student data, safety and suicide prevention training and insurance information will be presented. Flu shots will also be offered throughout the day.

Board members also approved an agreement with Travco Behavioral Health, Inc. to provide counseling and wellness services to students.

Lastly, several supplemental contracts were approved for a long list of staff members Thursday.

“I’m glad that we are moving back to some traditional things, these staff members have dedicated their time outside the school day to work with our kids. I appreciate their efforts,” Siefke said.
