Jackie Brice of East Liverpool sits Saturday afternoon by the Museum of Ceramics and works on sketching the outline of the Thompson House from a photograph. Seventeen professional artists from around the state of Ohio Saturday gathered to kick off the Museum of Ceramics 40+1 anniversary celebration. Professional artists from around Ohio set up their easels in downtown East Liverpool Saturday to kick off the Museum of Ceramics’ “40+1” Anniversary Celebration. (40+1 as the Museum’s 40th Anniversary Celebration had to be postponed due to Covid-19 last year.) Outdoor painters from the Ohio Plein Air Society (ohiopleinairsociety.com) and the Eastern Ohio Plein Air Club were on hand. Art pieces were then sold on scene. The event is receiving support locally from Tim Hortonás and nationally from Golden Artist Colors, Judson’s Art Outfitters and Streamline Publications.

The event continues when award-winning artist Christopher Leeper unveils a 4-foot by 32-foot mural he painted during a ceremony at 11 a.m. May 22 outside the museum. The mural project has been supported by the museum’s “Lady Slippers” fundraising organization. An outdoor evening party open to the public is planned from 7 to 10 p.m.

Two art exhibits are planned surrounding these activities – one at the Museum and the nearby at gallery space provided by Venture Home Real Estate, 517 Broadway, East Liverpool. The museum show will feature the work of Leeper and the other show at Venture entitled “Local Connections” will feature the work of local artists Barrie Archer, Betsy Babb and Nancy Hawkins. Both shows run May 15 through the 28. Hours are noon to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays.

Other events include an “Inspiration Series” talk and art class featuring the work of ceramic designer Don Schreckengost from 10 a.m. to noon May 18 at the Museum and a “Kids Art Walk” tour of the art exhibits at 4 p.m. May 25.
