Covid-19 cases on the rise again

LISBON — Columbiana County Covid-19 cases continued to rise this week with 128 people testing positive since April 9.

Over the past seven days, Laura Fauss, public information officer for the Columbiana County General Health District, said the county averaged 18 new cases per day and there have now been 8,535 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

One additional death has been added to the county’s total by the Ohio Department of Health, bringing the county toll to 226. There have been two new hospitalizations over the past week.

While the health department and many partners continue to vaccinate people, Fauss reports the number of people seeking the vaccines has slowed. Nearly 31,000 people in the county have now had at least one dose of a vaccine with 23,045 completing both doses. More than 60 percent of all county residents 70 and older have completed the required doses, including nearly 66 percent of those 80 and older.

Instead of doing large clinics at the vaccination complex at the fairgrounds for those receiving their first dose, Fauss said businesses with a number of interested workers can now reach out to the health department to set up an on-site clinic. This is similar to clinics set up at the schools and group homes.

Second dose clinics will continue at the fairgrounds for the next two weeks.

The health department will also be planning to vaccinate with Moderna at the health department located on state Route 45 just north of Lisbon. Call 330-420-5580 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Fridays to schedule an appointment.

Additionally, the health department has been in contact with school superintendents to help get information out to county residents age 16 and 17. At that age group, only the Pfizer vaccine is approved. Fauss said she is aware of three locations in the county currently with Pfizer vaccine — East Liverpool City Hospital, Discount Drug Mart in Lisbon and the East Palestine Rite Aid.
