Family theft worth one year

LISBON — A Leetonia woman will serve a year in prison for stealing more than $30,000 from family among other crimes she committed while addicted to drugs.

Megan A. Detchon, 30, Waddell Street, Leetonia, had pleaded guilty in June to tampering with evidence, misuse of a credit card, drug paraphernalia, OVI, telecommunications fraud and three counts of identity fraud.

According to court records, Detchon used the identity of both John Detchon and Rebecca Detchon, as well as Lori R. Rice, all without their permission to open at least one credit card.

Telling Judge Megan Bickerton she has recently completed some drug counseling programs, Detchon said she has been sober for seven months. She recently gave birth to a new baby and besides having custody of that baby, Detchon said she is seeking custody of two more children in January.

While Bickerton said she believes Detchon has taken steps in the right directions, she also pointed out it appears Detchon was using drugs for a month after she knew she was pregnant and had most likely used drugs during the pregnancies of her five other children. Bickerton questioned whether Detchon’s children are affected by her drug use when they were never given a choice.

Through tears, Detchon continued to apologize for what she had done, including to her mother, who was in the courtroom. Bickerton pointed out Detchon and the father of her children had taken advantage of her parents, who she said are raising their children while they stole them blind. According to Bickerton, Detchon not only stole $30,000 from her parents alone, but also ruined their credit.

“I don’t want to be an embarrassment anymore,” Detchon sobbed. “I don’t want to let anyone down anymore. I don’t… I was sick and I am trying to do better.”

However, Bickerton said Detchon still needed to take responsibility for what she did and she could not let Detchon once again escape responsibility for what she had done by placing her on community control. Instead she urged her to take advantage of the programs while in prison.

When asked about whether she wanted restitution ordered, Detchon’s mother said she just wanted her daughter back instead.
