CHESTER, W.Va. – The Orchards at Foxcrest was privileged to witness history on August 3, 2020 as Pepperberry Suites resident Ethel Werner celebrated her 104th birthday. Ethel was treated to a large sheet cake decorated with colorful flowers, roses, balloons, cards, and a “socially distanced” visit from her family. It was quite apparent, even behind her face mask, that she was smiling from ear to ear.

Ethel was born in McKees Rocks, Pa. on August 3, 1916, a daughter of the late John “Jack” and Pearl Hankey. Her family operated a thriving bakery in that area which later evolved into what is now known as Hankey Farms in Oakdale, Pa. Raised on the farm herself, she later married Fred Werner, and they made their home and raised their children there as well.

During the 50’s and 60’s, Ethel and Fred ran a restaurant/bar together, but were perhaps best known for the many years they spent at Williams Country Club in Weirton, W.Va. Fred was the head chef and Manager of the Club, and Ethel became the “unofficial” Assistant Manager – lending support to members and staff alike. She still has a great recall for the people she met there, many of whom became like family.

In 1994, her beloved Fred passed away. By this time, Ethel had retired to New Manchester, W.Va., where she lived alone and cared for herself in her own home until the age of 97. Just shy of her 100th birthday, she moved to The Orchards, where she has been a blessing ever since.

Ethel attributes her longevity to active living; she remains mentally sharp and has a keen interest in both history and current events alike. She is small in stature but make no mistake – Ethel spent a lifetime enjoying the finer things in life, such as whole milk, bacon, eggs and real butter!

Her family includes one daughter, Carol Lackinger, and a son, Fred Werner and his wife, Janet. There are three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Her son-in-law, Frank Lackinger, passed away recently.

The Fox family – as well as the entire staff – at The Orchards wishes to extend their heartiest congratulations and well wishes to this remarkable lady.
