NEW CUMBERLAND — The New Cumberland Garden Club recently installed three wooden “Book Nooks” in the city of New Cumberland. They are located near the Magic Tree Community Garden, next to the former Staley Hardware downtown, and near the New Cumberland RX Center on Ridge Avenue. The brightly painted wooden boxes were built by local high school senior Ethan Hurl, who is enrolled in the carpentry class at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center. The book nooks are based on the Free Little Library System which is a free book-sharing project that runs on the honor system. Rules for using the Book Nooks are as follows: (1) Donate only new or gently-used books; (2) If you take a book or two, try to bring some to share; (3) You don’t need to donate a book to take one; (4) Books taken from the book nook cannot be sold.

The garden club is in the process of collecting books to fill the boxes, and donations can be dropped off at the city building in New Cumberland. Once enough donations have been received, club members will sanitize the books and place them in the Book Nooks. Notice will be given once the book nooks are ready to be used. If you visit the boxes to drop off books, and there is no room inside, please do not leave books on the ground or on the top of the box. Either come back another day or bring your donations to the city building. Garden club members will be taking care of the book nooks to ensure that new titles are added each week, and books that do not move well will be removed and brought back later. Each book nook will be stocked with both children’s books and books for older readers, too. Like the Free Little Library System on which they are based, the new Book Nooks hope to “inspire a love of reading, build community, and spark creativity.”
