Ruth Blackburn

HOPEDALE — Ruth Dickey Blackburn, now residing in Gables Care Center, Hopedale, Ohio, will be celebrating her 100th birthday on June 12. She was born in Fernwood, Ohio, June 12, 1920 to David G. and Nellie Carpenter Dickey and grew up in Cadiz alongside her sisters, Gladys Reppart and Eileen Vorhees and brother, Harold Dickey.

Ruth graduated from Cadiz High School in 1938 and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh learning clothing design and construction and continued sewing up until two years ago.

She married G. Paul Blackburn on Dec. 8, 1946. They moved to Salineville and Paul operated the Saline Oil Co., and together they raised their daughter, Janice Lee Ward. Janice and husband Walter have three sons, Christopher, Dennis and Adam who have given Ruth six grandchildren, Alex, Zoey, Emily, Olivia, Katelyn and Xavier.

In later years, Ruth’s husband and his friend, Hugh Holligan of Bergholz, built and operated Spring Hills Golf Club near Richmond, Ohio. She and Paul moved back to Cadiz, and were members of the Cadiz Presbyterian Church. Paul passed away in 2010.

Ruth has two nieces and one nephew locally, Claren Blackburn of Hopedale and Patty Rice and Gary Vorhees of Cadiz.

Family members are asking friends and neighbors if they might send Ruth a card to help celebrate all these 100 years of living and participating in our communities.

Ruth’s address is Gables Care Center, 350 Lahm Drive, Hopedale, Ohio 43976.
