Brophey honored at board meeting

WELLSVILLE — The coronavirus pandemic has meant a lot of changes throughout the world over the month, and that includes Wellsville.

The village’s school board met Monday night via virtual technology to wrap up some business before the end of the month, when they will graduate its Class of 2020 students later this month.

All agenda items were approved via Superintendent Richard Bereschick, who noted that longtime board member Thomas Brophey’s absence was felt.

Brophey died suddenly on May 10 at age 56. He had served the district for 28 years as a board member and been honored numerous times by the state for his service on behalf of Wellsville’s youth.

In addition, Bereschick explained that the board extended Motions Of Understanding to its two unions (OAPSE and WTA) another year with a 3 percent raise instead of electing to renegotiate this year despite contracts being up due to the pandemic.

Members also contracted for property, fleet and liability insurance with Schools of Ohio Sharing Authority for $50,715 annually and purchased a new school bus for $85,851 from Truck Sales and Service.

Contracts also were approved with the Jefferson County Educational Service Center for its Virtual Learning Academy and therapy services as needed.

The school board will next meet at 7 p.m. June 15.
