Animals killed in barn fire

GUILFORD LAKE — Some cows, goats and turkeys were lost Wednesday in a barn fire on Schneider Road.

Hanover Township Fire Matt Vickroy said they received a call about 10:30 p.m. that a barn on Schneider Road was on fire. It turned out to be Jarrod Craft residence, which is located across the road from Stone Gate Farm.

The wood-frame barn with a metal roof and siding was fully engulfed in flames by the time the first firefighters arrived and it was termed a total loss. Inside were four beef cows, four goats, two turkeys and about 30 chickens.

“The only animals that got out were the chickens,” Vickroy said.

He believes the barn is covered by Craft’s homeowners insurance but was unsure about the livestock.

There were 60 bales of hay also stored in the barn, but Vickroy said the hay was not believed to be the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined.

Hanover Township responded with 18 firefighters, and the Winona and Perry Township fire departments assisted. They remained at the scene until about 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
