One killed in W.Va. crash

Hancock County Sheriff’s Office deputies continue to investigate a Thursday afternoon fatal crash on state Route 8.

Shortly after 5:20 p.m., dispatchers sent personnel to investigate a crash at the intersection of Lincoln Highway (US Route 30) and Veterans Boulevard (WV Route 8).

Upon arrival, deputies reported finding two vehicles with heavy damage. Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said that the initial investigation indicates that a pickup truck traveling north on Veterans Boulevard began to make a left turn onto Lincoln Highway but entered into the path of an eastbound mini-van and was struck.

A trained emergency medical responder assisted the pickup truck driver, who was unresponsive and trapped in his vehicle, until other emergency responders arrived. Chester, Lawrenceville and East Liverpool also provided assistance along with Hancock County ambulance.

Although the unnamed driver in the pickup ultimately died, a passenger was released at the scene with no apparent injuries, a press release notes. The mini-van driver was treated on scene for minor injuries but was subsequently arrested on an outstanding out-of-state warrant on unrelated charges. He was not named in the release.

It is unknown if deputies will elect to file charges at the conclusion of this investigation. No other information was available at press time.
