Village will gather to honor one of their own
WELLSVILLE– The village will be honoring those who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, including Wellsville’s own Cathy Salter, at 9 a.m. today.
Salter was in the South tower 18 years ago when the tower was struck by a plane. She was the assistant vice president/claim manager at Aon Risk Services Inc.
This year representatives from the Wellsville fire and police departments will be joining Mayor Nancy Murray and Salter’s mother Eleanor Salter, in placing a wreath on Salter’s memorial.
The village has held a 9/11 memorial most years to remember Salter and to reflect on the events and losses of the day.
“We like to honor all the heroes of that day and we pray for the families that lost loved ones during the tragedy,” said Murray.
In years past the memorial has had speakers, and the Wellsville band and choir perform, but this year the village is only placing a reef on the memorial and holding a moment of silence. Murray explained with Sept. 11 landing on a Wednesday this year, it is difficult to expect those who work to attend and to have students leave school to perform at the service.
Everyone is welcome to attend the service held at Salter’s memorial by the VIllage Flood Wall on Lisbon Street.
