East Liverpool haunted attraction raises money for local charitable efforts

EAST LIVERPOOL–A double bogey may take on a completely new definition when one attends the latest fundraiser for the Halloween holiday at Hidden Oaks Golf Course. The course, which is located at 16410 Irish Ridge Road, begins its haunted mini-golf attraction Thursday through Saturday until November 2. Also in conjunction with the spooktacular festivities, the Beacon Association is holding its “Hidden” haunted trail, during the entire month of October on the same days.

As Paula Vaughn, vice president of the Beacon Association explains, it is a $10 admission to participate in each attraction individually. Hours will be 7-10 p.m. Thursday and Friday in addition to 7-11 p.m. Saturdays (weather permitting). On Halloween night, the attractions will be open from 7 p.m. “until the bodies are gone,” the women explain.

Those who might have a phobia about the dark forest are recommended to come between 7-8 p.m.

The last night of the attractions is November 2, when proceeds benefit the Beacon Association’s American Cancer Society efforts.

Vaughn and Carol Gresh, co-owner of the golf course, credit Gary Hegerle for not only designing the mini-golf course but making the event possible.

Vaughn said that she saw an advertisement in the paper and approached the Greshes regarding a possible partnership.

According to Vaughn, the trail will take visitors on a 30-minute trip through the wooded area of the facility. She said she believes those who take the walk will receive a “haunted experience,” complete with the usual Halloween theme of ghosts, zombies and horror characters.

In March 2014, the Beacon Association emerged after an East Liverpool Jaycees chapter was discontinued, planning to continue sponsoring the same community events. With attendance to the Haunted Trail, Vaughn reminds that money is earmarked to the Beacons community efforts, which include Special Olympics, the Relay for Life, the Christmas parade, Pottery Festival and other efforts in the Tri-State area.

Plans to establish scholarship funds for area schools like East Liverpool, Beaver Local, Wellsville and Oak Glen has been a longterm goal that has yet to come to fruition.

Sponsors for the Hidden Oaks Haunted Mini Golf and the “Hidden” haunted trial are Mason Color and Heritage Thermal Services. For more information, visit the Beacon Association Facebook page or call 330-386-3840.
