Beaver Local one of top districts for state report cards

LISBON –The Ohio Department of Education has released the state report cards for the 2018-19 school year, with four area districts receiving an overall B grade.

Leading the way were Beaver Local, Crestview, West Branch and South Range.

Receiving overall grades of C were Columbiana, East Palestine, Lisbon, Leetonia, Salem, United Local and Sebring.

East Liverpool, Southern Local and Wellsville received Ds, while the Buckeye Online School for Success in East Liverpool received an F.

No local school district received an A.

This is the second year since the state changed to an letter grade to measure a district’s overall performance, which included also assigning grades of A-F to the various components and subcomponents that make up the report card.

The overall grade is based on how districts fared in six components — achievement, progress, gap closing, graduation rate, improving the reading skills of at-risk K-3 students, and preparedness of students who go onto college or a trade school.

The following is a breakdown of the 15 area districts fared compared to 2017-18:

Performance Index is generally considered the measure of a district’s academic performance. It is based on the overall performance of students on the various state tests.

Indicators met is the second most-important component for evaluating academic performance. It is based on the percentage of students who pass the state exams, and the passage rate for each indicator is 80 percent. The end of course improvement indicator is 25 percent .

There are 618 school districts in Ohio, and the following is how the local districts ranked based on the performance index, from highest to lowest: South Range, 43; Columbiana, 105; Crestview, 155; West Branch, 204; Beaver Local, 224; United Local, 257; Salem, 331; East Palestine, 376; Lisbon, 403; Wellsville, 483; Leetonia, 497; Sebring, 548; Southern Local, 549; and East Liverpool, 575.
