Man killed when struck by train

Police from East Liverpool and Northern Southern security continue to investigate a train fatality on the city’s west side this morning.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification by the Columbiana County Coroner according to city police. However, an incident report reveals that the man was struck near Westgate Middle School shortly before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on the tracks behind Robertson’s Heating and Cooling.

Officers responded to the scene and spoke to the locomotive’s conductor who told investigators when he witnessed a male lying in the fetal position between the rails of the train. He had been traveling a low rate of speed due to passing a northbound train and shutting off the headlight to avoid blinding each other.

After confirming the subject’s death, the coroner’s office and ELFD-ASI ambulance responded to the scene.
