East Liverpool schools add curriculum director

EAST LIVERPOOL — East Liverpool school district is hoping the addition of a curriculum director to their administration means a marked improvement in student performance.

Board members voted Thursday afternoon during their regular meeting to appoint Julie Rowe, the former associate principal at East Liverpool Junior-Senior High School, to oversee their curriculum, instruction and school improvement efforts. She will be paid $78,089.51 as the new director of curriculum, instruction and school improvement starting August 1 and running through July 31,2022.

After a brief executive session to discuss the matter, they also voted to deny one-year leaves of absence for Sara Green and Angelene Shannon. Treasurer Kathy Jo Laughlin’s request to increase lunch prices 25 cents from $3.50 to $3.75 also was approved.

The school board also appointed Joy E. Witte as a fifth-grade language arts teacher at Westgate Middle School, Jocelyn Mader as a preschool teacher at Westgate, Christopher Cardelien as technology coordinator for the district, Timothy Fultz, HVAC supervisor for the district; Nancy Flores, high school foreign language teacher; John Kiger and Ryan Willis as associate junior-senior high school principals; Jan Stover as administrative assistant to the superintendent; and Samuel Halstead as building and grounds supervisor districtwide.

Jack Cunningham will serve as North Elementary School principal, Marjorie Wright as food service supervisor for the district and Melissa McCartney as a psychologist, and Barry Highfield as building and grounds custodian.

Supplemental contracts granted include Greg Voorhees, athletic director; Kyde Kelly, eighth-grade volleyball coach; Tiffany Rudibaugh, seventh-grade volleyball coach; Gerald Bartlett, debate team adviser; Michele Davis, career tech chair; Jason Duke, William Leavell, Duane Cehrs and Brian Vaughn as football coaches; Hailey McLaughlin, varsity assistant girls soccer coach; and Kayla Duffield, ninth-grade cheerleading advisor.

As requested, the school board also:

— Renewed insurance coverage for 2019-2010 school year with Ohio School Plan for $77,637, which is $734 less than this year.

— Approved purchasing of supplies from the OME-RESA cooperative plan at the state minimum prices as well as legal services from OME-RSA legal service at $150 or 38 cents per student.

— Accepted the resignation of Jenna Laughlin, who was employed as a district middle school teacher since 2017.

— Accepted donation of a Kurtzman baby grand piano from Maxine Sutherland.

— Approved the sale of 175 unusable Chromebooks for recycling at $3-10 per Chromebook dependent on condition.

— Approved all district forms to digitalized and uploaded online to around $15,200 in year one and $12,200 each year after.

–Accepted the resignations of custodian Patty Tice, who has worked for the district for 39 years, and Alissa Butler, who will retrain her duties as a crossing guard. Amy Creaturo-Moore also resigned as the ninth-grade cheerleading advisor.

Board members will hold their next regular meeting, which is expected to be Randy Taylor’s last as superintendent, at 4 p.m. Monday, July 22 at Westgate Middle School.
