Education budget approved

NEW CUMBERLAND– Hancock County Board of Education held a Budget Hearing & Adoption meeting prior to the Board of Education meeting. In the Tuesday meeting the board approved the 2019-2020 fiscal budget with a four to one vote.

Board member Tim Reinard was the only opposing vote for the budget.

“I’ve been concerned about wages. I think it’s a state issue not a Hancock County issue,” said Reinard. “I’ve asked previous superintendents to look into, and I’d like to see it addressed.”

In the 2019-2020 budget the board approved

-A budget of $298,694 to buy three new busses.

-The ability to place video cameras for self contained class rooms, to adhere to the state’s requirement set in Senate Bill 632. This bill requires cameras be placed into a special education classroom if parents or members of the school district request a camera be put into the classroom to monitor incidents or to watch for signs of abuse. The state will be providing funds for these cameras, the amount and type of funding is undetermined at this moment.

-A budget of $837,700 for sub costs. With $580,200 budgeted for substitute teachers and $257,500 for service substitutes.
