Class of 2019 graduation numbers fall to 148

CALCUTTA — Like most of the school districts in Columbiana County, if not all, Beaver Local’s graduating class continues to shrink.

The school board on Monday approved a 2019 graduating class of 148 students, which Superintendent Eric Lowe said is lower than last year. The number of graduates was as much as 200 in the early 2000s.

Graduation is scheduled for May 24.

In other business, Lowe and the board again expressed their appreciation for voter renewal of the $1.2 million operating levy in the May 7 primary election. He also thanked the volunteers who made up the levy committee, saying they did an outstanding job getting the information out to the community.

Lowe also thanked the local businesses that supported those efforts, especially Tim Horton’s, which allowed the committee to place informational tray liners in all the trays used in the week leading up to the election.

Board President Jerry Barnett agreed. “It was a huge community effort,” he said.

School Treasurer Stacy Williams provided board members with the five-year financial forecast, something treasurers are required by law to do every May and October. The district is expected to end the current school year with a $772,000 balance, which she estimates will to grow to $1.2 million by the end of the 2019-20 school year.

Williams said renewal of the operating levy will allow them to proceed with some projects and other things that had been put on hold.

In other action, the board:

— Renewed its contract with Nutrition Inc. to continue operating the school’s cafeteria system. The district is guaranteed a savings of $81,533 in the next fiscal year.

— Approved the retirements of secretary Cassie Ensinger, effective July 31, and paraprofessional Beth Chan, effective Aug. 31, and the resignation of secretary Mary Murray, who is moving to Florida. “We appreciate the many years they’ve given Beaver Local,” Lowe said.

— Awarded supplemental contracts to Chandler Hoppel, assistant cheerleading adviser, and Debbie Miller, faculty manager.

— Granted family/medical leave to Matt Bostian and Kelly Gaines.
