Hancock County BOE approves assignments

NEW CUMBERLAND — With winter sports coming up soon, the Hancock County Board of Education approved several sports assignments for the upcoming season during Tuesday’s meeting.

Among the personnel matters included the sports assignments of four at Oak Glen High School, three at Weir High School and one at Oak Glen Middle School. Hired on the Oak Glen High end were Brandon Miller and Kenny Shuman as wrestling assistants, and Rachel McKay and Jeremy Krzys as girls basketball assistants, while Rick Brown was hired as wrestling assistant for Oak Glen Middle.

McKay, Krzys and Brown met state guidelines established for non-certified personnel employed in coaching activities. Krzys was the only one of the three that is also on an unpaid/volunteer basis.

As for Weir High, all three coaching assignments were also on unpaid/volunteer bases, going to Dylan Cassiadoro as boys basketball assistant, Tommie Goff as wrestling assistant, and Tyler Warrick as boys track assistant, the only assignment from Tuesday’s agenda actually for spring sports.

In relation to coaching, however, the board approved the resignations of longtime Oak Glen High head volleyball coach Ethel Riser and Oak Glen High’s girls tennis coach Kenneth Keller, both citing personal reasons. Riser’s resignation went into effect Oct. 30, while Keller’s was effective Nov. 7.

Meanwhile, in other personnel matters, the board approved the hiring of Angela Cunningham, who will serve as a social studies teacher at Oak Glen Middle for the current school year. Cunningham holds a Bachelor’s degree with seven years experience. The board also accepted the resignation of countywide substitute teacher Judy Loring effective Oct. 1, to which Loring sought other employment.

The board also approved the transfer of David Slack from his previous position of substitute custodian to custodian at New Manchester Elementary, to which he will handle morning duties for eight hours a day for 240 days. His transfer of positions went into effect on Wednesday.

In addition, in two matters related to leaves of absence, the board approved the return of Karen Crane, an aide/Autism mentor at Weir Middle School, following a medical leave of absence which ended Nov. 2, while also extending the medical leave of absence of John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center custodian Ora Ray Pernell, which is now schedule to conclude at the end of the work day Feb. 12, 2019. Pernell’s leave of absence was originally to conclude on Nov. 12.

Also on Tuesday, the board went into executive session for a personnel hearing that had been scheduled for that meeting.

Tuesday’s meeting was held at the media center of Oak Glen High School, which was to coincide with a distinguished students’ award ceremony also held that evening. The next board meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Nov. 26 at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.
