Health board seat open in Hancock County

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va–The Hancock County Commission recently approved a motion to vacate a seat on the Hancock County health board.

It was during the last commission meeting, earlier this month, when Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Mike Lucas provided background information on the reasoning for the request.

“One of the members of the health department of their board moved from Butler District to Clay District. The particular member was the slotted member from Butler and the representative for that district,” he said. “His moving to Clay District, especially when there were no seats available in that particular district — they were both filled — there was nowhere for this board member to go.”

That member was Kyle MacPherson, and his movings his residence resulted in his resigning the health board seat. Therefore, this now open position results in the Commission needed to appoint an individual to the health board.

Commission President Jeff Davis asked Lucas to validate the location the new member needed to reside — either Butler District or if Grant District was an option.

The health board currently consists of two members from Clay and one each from Butler and Grant districts.

“You can’t have more than two board members from any one district,” explained Davis. “… If I understand this correctly, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Mr. MacPherson being from Butler, we wouldn’t have to fill that position with a Butler person.”

On this particular issue, commissioners made a motion to review the code to clarify district location of the new member during a special meeting held last week.

Commissioner Paul Cowey expressed his thanks to MacPherson for being on the Health Board, saying the commission “appreciated everything he did. Thank you.”

Last Tuesday, commissioners determined the vacant seat can be filled by an applicant residing in either the Grant or Butler districts.

Lucas recommended when the position is filled, it will be for the remainder of the term left by MacPherson.

Commissioner Joe Barnabei made a motion for the advertisement for those interested in the seat be posted for two weeks. Deadline for applications and resumes is Sept. 28.
