County unemployment rate continues to drop
LISBON — Columbiana County’s unemployment rate continues to drop but it still lags behind the statewide and national rates.
The county’s jobless rate in August was 5 percent, down from 5.4 percent the month before, according to figures released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The county’s unemployment rate has now declined six of the past seven months, with the only increase occurring in June.
The statewide and national rates remained unchanged in August, at 4.6 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively.
The number of county residents receiving unemployment benefits declined from 1,892 to 1,422, while the estimated number of people in the county with jobs declined by 500 in August to 44,000.
The unemployment rate declined in all 88 Ohio counties, with the county’s rate being the 24th highest.
Among the adjoining Ohio counties, the county’s unemployment rate was lower than Mahoning (5.7 percent) and Jefferson (6 percent) but higher than Carroll (4.7 percent) and Stark (4.5 percent).
