Contract canceled

LISBON — Second-half property tax bills are being mailed out this week, and those who pay by credit card will be unable to do so, at least for now.

County Treasurer Linda Bolon said Official Payments, the company she contracted with to process credit card payments, recently canceled its contract because of a billing dispute with a customer. She is in the process of contracting with a new vendor — Value Payment Systems.

“This has certainly been disappointing to find that after a 21-year relationship with Official Payments they decided to discontinue service. I apologize for the inconvenience but look forward to providing better and cheaper service in the future,” she said.

Official Payment’s convenience fee was 3 percent, but Value Payment is only charging 2.65 percent.

The tax bill statements, which will include a note of explanation, have a payment deadline of Sept. 7.

“I rather doubt we will be able to be up and running for this tax season, but the new system will certainly be ready for the first first-half tax season in 2019,” Bolon said.

She said while paying by credit card has not been used by many property owners, it is a convenient option.
