Retired teachers meet, get update on health care, pensions

The Columbiana County Retired Teachers Association welcomed three new members: Janice Reeder, Debbie McWilliams and Julie Rowe. Tamla Cole, the State Teachers’ Retirement System Assistant Director of Membership, traveled from Columbus to alert Columbiana County Retired Teachers of the latest changes in pensions and how to maintain affordable healthcare.

The Columbiana County Retired Teachers Association recently met at the Lisbon First United Methodist Church. Nancy Dicken welcomed members and led them in the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. Lunch was served by the women of the church.

Gayle Noel conducted the business meeting with the minutes and treasurer’s reports approved. It was announced that the applications for the three $250 teacher grants had been forwarded to the local public schools’ superintendents for disbursement to their teaching staffs. Applications explaining a proposed classroom project must be returned by Dec. 1.

Guest speaker was Tamla Cole, assistance director of membership education for the State Teachers Retirement System. She offered an update on pensions and healthcare.

Colleen McCoy won the 50/50 raffle.

The next CCRTA meeting will be held at noon Nov. 18 at the Lisbon First United Methodist Church. The program will be provided by Susan Weaver of the Museum of Ceramics.
