East Liverpool native presents research project at Ohio Wesleyan symposium

DELAWARE — Ohio Wesleyan University students shared the results of their 2021 summer science research projects Sept. 27 at the university’s 29th annual Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium.

Mackenzie Wade of East Liverpool presented “Modeling a Central Ohio Regional Food Network for Sustainable Outcomes,” mentored by Ashley Allen of the Ohio Wesleyan Department of Environment and Sustainability.

“The crises that are upending our world — from the immediate dilemma of the COVID-19 pandemic to the long-term existential threat of global climate change — have boldly reminded us of our reliance on science, mathematics, and technology,” according to the symposium’s abstract book. “We turn to scientists and their research to help us understand and solve such global challenges.”

Laura Tuhela-Reuning, director of OWU’s Summer Science Research Program (SSRP), said she is pleased to see so many students completing research experiences and becoming scientists.

“One of the most rewarding parts of SSRP for me is watching the students grow as scientists, seeing them take command of a research project, and knowing that they are gaining the confidence to speak and act as scientists,” she said. “Science cannot be learned solely from a book. Science must be experienced through research, and at OWU, we encourage students to plunge in, preparing them to be successful researchers both at OWU and at other universities.”

The Spano Foundation delivers school

supplies to 15 school districts in Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN – The Anthony V. Spano Foundation had the opportunity to deliver thousands of school supplies to 15 school districts these past two weeks. Because of the anonymous donation received earlier this year, in the amount of $27,000, the Anthony V. Spano Foundation with the help of Diagnostics Direct Inc. was able to deliver 15 pallets of much-needed schools supplies to the following local school districts: Minerva Local, Lisbon Exempted Village School, East Liverpool, East Palestine, United, Heartland Christian and Wellsville.

“This funding was a wonderful gift because not only did it serve our students, there were items for the teachers. There were so many supplies, for K-12, that the students and teachers appreciated,” stated Melissa Kemats, School Counselor for Lisbon Exempted Village Schools.

Kim Davis, Intervention Specialist at Minerva High School, said, “we received school supplies to help those in grades 9-12 who couldn’t afford to purchase supplies.”

The Fund was established by the Spano Foundation of Youngstown, in 2016 to help primary and secondary school teachers, students and communities to help purchase much-needed classroom supplies for their underprivileged students.
