The life and times of Betty Crocker

Long before there was Martha Stewart there was Betty Crocker. In 1950, Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book was released. To date it has sold more than 75 million copies. Betty Crocker wasn’t a real person. She was created in 1921 by a flour company, but that didn’t stop her from becoming an advisor to American cooks. Her popularity continue. Historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., will present an illustrated lecture at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, via Zoom, to tell how Betty Crocker was invented and how she has endured through the years. Goddard holds a PH.D. from Northwestern University and master’s degrees in museum studies and in theater. She has been lecturing and performing on topics in history for more than 15 years. As a lifelong resident of the Chicago area she has written two books on Chicago history. The presentation is open to the public and free of cost to attend. Registration is required.
