Balsa Bees will fly in Saturday

The 41st annual Big Plane Fly-in hosted by the Alliance Balsa Bees is scheduled for Saturday at Barber Airport on state Route 225 north of Alliance. Flying will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature a large variety of aircraft ranging from biplanes to jets. All planes will be lined up at noon on the the field so spectators can have a closer look and ask questions. Afterward guests will have a chance to vote on their favorite plane. Tickets will be given to spectators as they arrive and the planes will be numbered so spectators can write down their pick by number. The winning pilot will receive the People’s Choice Plaque. Concessions may be purchased at the Crash & Burn Grille and restrooms will be available. For spectators safety there will be Red, White and Blue flags marking off restricted areas.

EL health office open for shots

The East Liverpool health department is now seeing patients again for immunizations. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Later afternoon hours are also available upon request. Call ahead, 330/385-5123, to schedule and ask any questions. Most private insurances and Medicaid are accepted. Free vaccines are provided for children who uninsured or underinsured. Adult vaccines also are available. Only one person is scheduled at a time for social distancing purposes. Guidelines for patients: If you are sick, don’t come in. If you were around anyone who has tested positive with COVID-19, don’t come in. Take your temperature before you come and we will take your temperature when you get here. Wear a mask. Only the patient or one parent with minor patient allowed in the clinic at one time.

Vendors sought for Salem pARTy

The Salem Second Saturday committee is seeking art and craft vendors for the August Second Saturday pARTy event Aug. 8. The event will be held at the Salem Historical Society, 239 S. Lundy Ave. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $25 for a 10-foot by 10-foot space. The committee is also accepting entries for the 2nd Annual Art pARTy Art and Photography Contest. Cost is $5 per entry. Divisions are adult, high school and youth. Forms and rules can be obtained by emailing the committee chairman at adamsjennifer2017@gmail.com.

Scholarship checks available

The checks awarded to the 2020 Salem High School Alumni Association scholarship recipients will be available for pickup beginning on Monday, July 20. Students will need their photo identification and a printed proof of registration for the fall term. If a family member will be picking up the check, students are asked to notify the office prior to them arriving for it. The SHSAA office is located at 330 E. State St. in downtown Salem and is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Questions can be referred to the office by calling 330-332-1427.

UMC clothing pantry to reopen

The Salem First United Methodist Church, 244 S. Broadway will reopen its clothing pantry on Thursday, July 23. The Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to noon the second Saturday and the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Clothing for men, women and children is available at no cost, absolutely free. Use the North Entrance (closest to Pershing) and proceed down the steps through the glass doors. The pantry is on the left. Masks will be required and if you do not have one, one will be provided for you. Six people will be permitted in the Pantry at one time and social distancing should be practiced at all times. No clothing donations will be accepted.

Spay and neuter clinic offered

The Hancock County Humane Foundation is holding a low-cost cat spay and neuter clinic on Sunday, Aug. 16. Cats both male and female will be fixed for $55. That also includes a rabies shot and flea and ear mite treatments. Call 304-224-2590 to book an appointment.

Steering Clear will resume

The Family Recovery Center’s driver intervention program, Steering Clear, plans to resume after being suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. The first session will be held at the Best Western Plus Dutch Haus Inn and Suites in Columbiana the weekend of July 23-26. The program will continue to operate as a 72-hour residential alternative to jail for first-time offenders convicted of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. FRC will be implementing safety precautions including taking the temperature of all who enter the hotel, asking screening questions for symptoms of COVID-19, and asking that everyone wear a mask. Other safety measures, including hand sanitizer, will be available and surfaces will be disinfected frequently throughout the day. If you want to learn more about the program, call 330-424-1468.

Food pantry open in Wellsville

The food pantry at the Wellsville First Baptist Church will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday. It will be drive-up only with people staying in their cars. Food will be boxed and will be placed in the trunk. People can show their IDs through the car window. New clients in the Wellsville area are being accepted. For information, call the church, 330/532-2654.

Lisbon pantry open today

The Lisbon First United Methodist food pantry is now open on the first and third Thursdays of each month. That means today from 10 a.m. to noon. The pantry is drive-up, and volunteers will load your vehicle. Please have photo ID and proof of residence. The pantry is open to all area residents.
