DeFilippo and Pugh

WEIRTON — The West Virginia Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Ka ppa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators held their meeting on March 5, 2020 at Williams Country Club in Weirton, W.Va. The room was decorated in the St. Patrick’s Day theme – Shamrock plants and green leprechaun hats. The hostesses were Diane Higgins and Susan Cullinan.

President Jerry DeFilippo and Chaplain Lisa Subrick conducted a memorial service for Gladys Wiles, 103 years old, and Betty Tustin, 88 years old. Both members joined the Omega Chapter, and they were the last two charter members of Fidelis Gamma Chapter.

Birthdays were recognized for the months of January, February, and March.

President DeFilippo lit a candle in honor of the chapter’s birthday, and she spoke briefly about the formation of WV Fidelis Gamma Chapter which was chartered 30 years ago. More history of the chapter will be given during Alpha Delta Kappa Month.

The thought for the day was read by Chaplain Lisa Subrick titled “Are you Listening”? from the book Each Day is a Gift.

Secretary Bonnie Queses read the minutes and correspondence. Treasurer Carolyn Allison gave the treasurer’s report. Nancy Conley gave the Altruistic report as she continues to distribute magazines, coloring books and crayons to Weirton Medical Center. Liz Pugh gave a report on the scholarship which will be presented this spring. President DeFilippo gave recognition to President Elect Janet Benzo who was recognized and featured in “The Catholic Spirit”, a newspaper serving the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese. Janet is assisted by Fidelis Gamma Sister, Nancy Deters, in the Friday Friends Program. Janet and Nancy provide weekend meals through the St. Anthony’s Church for students in Brooke Intermediate North School.

Carolyn Allison presented the new slate of officers for the 2020-2022 biennium. These officers will be installed at the April meeting.

President DeFilippo reinstated Donna Durkin as a member of Alpha Delta Kappa. Sisters welcomed her to the Fidelis Gamma Chapter. Also, President Jerry DeFilippo held a service to recognize Liz Pugh as a Sapphire Sister with 35 years service to Alpha Delta Kappa. Both ladies were given an African violet by President DeFilippo.

Past President Ruth Fuller ended the meeting by demonstrating how Christmas card fronts are being utilized by Oak Glen Middle School teacher Michelle McHaffie.

The WV State Convention will be held April 24-26 at Canaan Valley Resort. Six sisters plan to attend: Diane Higgins, Carolyn Allison, Ruth Fuller, Donna Durkin, Susan Cullinan and Jerry DeFilippo.

The Southeast Region Conference will be held in Wilmington, NC from July 6-9, 2020. Members are encouraged to attend and enjoy the great experience.

The meeting adjourned with the singing of “The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa.”
