Edison senior selected for All-State Choir
RICHMOND — Edison High School senior Troy Hackathorn was selected to attend the 2020 Ohio Music Education Association’s All-State Choir. Hackathorn, the son of Ty and Julie Hackathorn of Amsterdam, will attend the event on Jan. 31 – Feb. 1 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Ballroom in Cincinnati. He will be among 160 warblers from across the Buckeye State who will perform on Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. with conductor Dr. Andre Thomas, the Owen F. Sellers Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music Education at Florida State University. Prior to the performance, Hackathorn must attend six hours of regional rehearsals and a mandatory mass rehearsal on Jan. 11 at Otterbein University.
Participants submitted a recording of their vocals for consideration, and Hackathorn included his warmups to denote range as well as a rendition of “Ride On, King Jesus.” He was elated to take part in the honors choir and represent EHS.
“I’m excited,” he said. “A lot of hard work went into it.”
He has been a member of the school A cappella choir for the past five years and has participated in school musicals including “The Wedding Singer,” “Hello, My Baby” and “Annie.” Additionally, he has appeared in OMEA solo and ensemble contests, area talent contests and is a member of the school’s National Beta Club.
Dani Carroll, director of vocal music at EHS, was proud to see Hackathorn selected. “This is quite an honor. We haven’t had anyone audition since 2012,” Carroll commented.
