Fidelis Gamma meets at Williams Country Club
WEIRTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority for Women Educators held their meeting on June 6, 2019 at Williams Country Club in Weirton. As the members entered, hostesses Pat Accettolo and Elaine Ferrari had decorated the tables with pots of colorful Gerbera Daisies and plates of chocolate candies. A red, white, and blue banner was placed across the head table in honor of D-Day.
President Defilippo opened the meeting by lighting a candle as a memorial tribute to Eva Belle Catlett who joined the Omega Chapter on May 13, 2019 at the age of 98. Catlett was a Silver Sister (35 year) and served as president from 1996-1998. Catlett enjoyed poetry and wrote many poems of her own; therefore the members voted to place a book of poetry in the Follansbee Library in honor of Eva Belle Catlett.
President Defilippo welcomed the members and guests. Anna Byers, the 2019 Betty Shaw/Eva Belle Catlett Memorial Scholarship recipient, and her grandmother, Priscilla Barker, were guests at the June meeting. Scholarship Chairman Liz Pugh introduced Byers and her grandmother.. Anna plans to major in Elementary Education at West Liberty University. Members shared bits of teaching advice with Anna. Three of Anna’s former teachers were present – Donna Roman, Nancy Conley, and Bonnie Queses.
President DeFilippo shared the June birthdays – Shirley Deluca June 1st, Diane Higgins June 21st, and Janet Benzo June 30th.
Carolyn Allison read the Thought for the Day titled “Just for Anna” followed by a prayer and blessing in preparation for the meal. May minutes and correspondence was read by Secretary Bonnie Queses. Thank you cards were read from Scholarship recipient Anna Byers, Autum Burnem (Director of Material Child Services), and WMC Auxiliary. Treasurer’s Report was given by Carolyn Allison.
Altruistic Chairman Nancy Conley will continue to collect magazines for Weirton Medical Center and Diapers for the Gabriel Room. Liz Pugh and Carolyn Allison are working on the budget. Courtesy Chairman Pat Accettolo continues to send cards. Membership Chairman Ruth Fuller gave a report on prospective members.
Fraternity Education Chairman Diane Higgins gave an informative presentation on “The Longest Day” (which is on June 21st) , an altruistic project supporting the Alzheimer’s Association. Members voted to make a donation.
The Ohio Valley District Report was given and attended to by Janet Benzo, Diane Higgins, and Ruth Fuller. Members were proud of Janet Benzo who was recognized as the “Outstanding Volunteer of the Ohio Valley District” at the meeting on May 4th. WV State Altruistic Chairman Judi Veazey recognized a sister from each of the five districts in WV.
Diane Higgins will represent the Fidelis Gamma Chapter at the International Convention in Minneapolis this summer.
An important reminder: Fidelis Gamma Chapter will not meet in July due to the Fourth of July during the first week. The next meeting will be August 1st, 2019 with Carolyn Allison and Ruth Fuller as hostesses. The meeting was adjourned by singing of “The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa.”
