OVAC boys stars announced

Ten area boys basketball players received first-team honors on the All-Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.

They include East Liverpool senior Gabe Roach and junior Tre Jackson, Beaver Local junior Luke Chetock and Oak Glen seniors Sean Smith and Ethan Travis,in Class 4A and Wellsville senior Garrett Scott and junior Justin Wright, Southern Local junior Cam Grodhaus and Toronto seniors Nathan Karaffa and Trillion West in Class 2A.

Second-team selections include East Liverpool’s Brennan O’Hara, Beaver Local’s Josh Hilditch, Oak Glen’s Jarrett Gittings and Edison’s Isaac Schmitz in Class 4A and Wellsville’s Luke Green, Southern’s Jayce Sloan and Toronto’s Lucas Gulczynski in Class 2A.

OVAC honors top girls players

Beaver Local placed three girls basketball players on the All-Ohio Valley Athletic Conference first team.

Senior Jenna Riccardo, junior Riley Britt and freshman Elizabeth Kolkowski lead the Class 4A first-team selections that includes East Liverpool junior Emma Ludwig, Oak Glen senior Maggie Kovalcik and Edison senior Lauren Ferralli.

Southern Local senior Riley Felton and Toronto senior Jo’Zaeyah Jordan got first-team honors in Class 2A.

Names to the second team were Beaver Local’s Madison Ours, East Liverpool’s Ciara Peachey and Oak Glen’s Alexa Andrews in Class 2A and Southen Local’s Hannah Hayes and Toronto’s Kendal Thomas in Class 2A.

YSU women make Women’s NIT

YOUNGSTOWN–The Youngstown State University Women’s Basketball team still has some basketball left to play this season.

It was announced Monday that the Penguins have received an at-large berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. YSU begins first round round action at Cincinnati Thursday. The time will be announced today. It is the two school’s first meeting since 2013.

The Penguins (22-9) lost to Green Bay 55-53 in the Horizon League Tournament semifinals. They won a program-record 13 conference games this season.

YSU is one of three Horizon League teams invited to the WNIT, with IUPUI and Green Bay being the others.

The Penguins are playing in the WNIT for the third time in school history, with the other two appearances coming in 2015 and 2013.

Melinda Trimmer, a 2015 West Branch graduate, is a senior guard for the Penguins. She is averaging 7.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.

The Penguins’ first round opponent has yet to be determined. Game times will be announced tomorrow.

EOAC, MVAC clash

LISBON–The Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference and Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference all-star basketball teams split a pair of games Monday at Lisbon.

The EOAC won the girls game 52-36. Columbiana’s Tessa Liggett and Southern’s Riley Felton led the EOAC with 12 points each. Springfield’s Marlie Applegarth and Jackson-Milton’s Ashley Cameron each scored 10 points to lead the MVAC.

The MVAC won the boys game 78-66. Springfield’s Shane Eynon and Sebring’s Joey Clark each tallied 17 points to lead the MVAC. The EOAC was led by Lisbon;s Justin Sweeney and Wellsville’s Garrett Scott, who each scored 11 points.

Western Reserve’s Kennedy and Riley Miller won the girls and boys three point contests.
