Bowl eligible teams reach 37 in total

It’s been a rough year for two of the Mid-American Conference’s heavyweights.

Northern Illinois and Bowling Green, which faced each other in the league title game each of the past three seasons, are a combined 3-13 this season. Bowling Green (1-7) is one of only seven teams that already have no chance of becoming bowl eligible with at least a .500 record. Northern Illinois (2-6) could join that group soon. The Huskies actually host Bowling Green on Tuesday.

It is possible for 5-7 teams to make the postseason — it happened last season when there weren’t enough six-win teams to fill all the bowls — but for now, teams like Bowling Green are on the outside looking in. The Eagles hadn’t missed a bowl since 2011. Northern Illinois hasn’t missed out since 2007.
