CALCUTTA — The Beaver Local Beavers wanted to get junior Jenna Riccardo the school scoring record before turning their focus to the Division II sectional tournament opener Monday.

Riccardo scored with four seconds remaining in Wednesday’s 63-43 loss to Wheeling Central to become the Beavers’ career scoring leader.

“Wheeling Central has a phenomenal basketball team,” Beaver Local coach Stephanie Coie said. “She fought hard to get it.”

Riccardo finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs. She has 1,216 career points, breaking the mark of 1,215 set by Rachel McCoy 15 years ago.

“That’s a great achievement on her part as a junior,” Coie said. “Jenna is great player. She does a lot for us. Sometimes we ask her to do different things for us. She accepts that role and is a great leader.”

Beaver Local freshman Elizabeth Kolkowski added eight points and seven rebounds.

The Beavers finish the regular season with a 13-8 record.

Wheeling Central — ranked eighth in West Virginia Class A state poll. — led 17-10 in the first quarter and 37-14 at halftime.

Junior Eden Gainer led the Maroon Knights with a game-high 33 points.

“She’s the best guard I have seen all year,” Coie said. “It’s unbelievable how well she played. She sat out all year with injury last year.”

The Beavers will host Cambridge at 7 p.m. Monday in the sectional opener.

“We’ll bounce back,” Coie said. “We’ll be ready for Monday.”

Beaver Local won the two-quarter junior varsity game, 20-10. Jensen Britt led the Beavers with six points and Leah Riccardo had four.
