Golden Bears off and running
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.–The Oak Glen wrestling team had a mostly successfull first day of action at the 72nd annual West Virginia State High School Wrestling Tournament.
Four Golden Bears punched their tickets to the quarterfinal round Thursday at Big Sandy Super Store Arena.
As expected, top-ranked and two-time defending state champion Peyton Hall made quick work of his first round opponent in the 138-pound bracket. It took Hall just 45 seconds to pin Phil Spurlock from Independence. Next up is Williamstown’s Mason Deem in the quarterfinals.
Defending state runner-up Shawn Moore got off and running in the 113-pound bracket by pinning Nitro’s Timmy Dyess at the 5:24 mark of his first round match. Moore will face Lewis County’s Joseph Blake in the quarterfinals today.
In 145-pound action, Oak Glen’s Jonathan Creese breezed into the quarterfinals with a pin of Moorefield’s Kevin Wetzel at the 1:37 mark. Creese’s next opponent is Liam Lusher from Independence today.
Oak Glen’s Kyler O’Conner emerged from his 195-pound first round match with a tough 1-0 victory over Herbert Hoover’s Mason Atkinson. O’Conner will take on J.D. McCallister from Winfield in today’s quarterfinal matchup.
In 106-poind action, Oak Glen’s Camden Barr fell to Phillip Barbour’s Caleb Nuzum 8-0. Barr will take on Midland Trail’s Colton Legg in the consolation bracket today.
Oak Glen freshman 120-pounder Clayton Lamb was pinned at the 1:24 mark of his first round match by Independence’s Bryce Perdue. Lamb will be back in action today against Billy Smith from Winfield in the consolation bracket.
The second session will get underway at 11:30 a.m. today with championship bracket quarterfinals as well as first and second round consolation matches.
