Prince fourth at Ohio Open

MEDINA — Blake Prince of East Liverpool jumped into contention at the 98th Ohio Open on Tuesday.

Prince, a former East Liverpool High School and Cleveland State University standout, shot a 6-under-par 66 at Fox Meadow Country to climb into a three-way tie for fourth place.

There were 52 golfers who made the cut at 2-over par and will play the final 18 holes today at Weymouth Country Club. Prince will tee off at 10:4 0 a.m. today.

Prince is 7-under for the tournament after rounds of 71 on Monday and 66 on Tuesday.

He has the third-most birdies in the tournament with 12 (nine coming Tuesday), trailing only the top two golfers, Stephen Gangluff of Delaware and and defending champion Chase Wilson of Zanesville.

Gangluff, a former Ohio State University golfer who competed on the PGA Tour in 2002 and 2012, maintained the lead at 14-under par. He has shot 64-66–130 including 10 birdies on Tuesday.

He is three strokes ahead of Wilson, a 2009 Zanesville High School graduate and a former standout at High Point University. Wilson birdied four of the first five holes Tuesday for rounds of 65-68–133.

Recent East Liverpool High School graduate Alex Tambellini missed the cut at 11-over par. He had two rounds of 83 for a 166. On Tuesday, his round included a 7, 6 and nine 5s at Weymouth

On Tuesday, Fox Meadow averaged 75.08 strokes and Weymouth 75.65 strokes.

Clipper Cross Country Series

COLUMBIANA — The 20th annual Clipper Cross Country Series will be held in on Wednesdays in August at the Ward Athletic Complex behind Columbiana High School.

It will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays with the Aug. 1 and Aug. 165 races on the middle school 1.85-mile course and the Aug. 8 and Aug. 22 races on the high school 3.1-mile course. Timing chips will be used.

Awards will be presented to the top six males and females in the following divisions: pre-middle school, middle school, high school, open, masters (40-49) and grand masters (50 and over). Runners who compete in all four races will receive a T-shirt.

Cost is $6 per runner per night. Registration begins at 6 p.m. the day of the race. Proceeds will benefit the Columbiana cross country and track programs.

Guilford Lake Triathlon

GUILFORD LAKE — The Salem Community Center’s inaugural “Guilford Lake Triathlon” will be held at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 18.

Ex-Buckeye Kudla dies at 34

COLUMBUS (AP) — Mike Kudla, a star defensive end who played on Ohio State’s 2002 national championship team, has died. He was 34.

The northeastern Ohio school district where he played in high school posted on Twitter on Monday that he died Sunday. The cause was not disclosed.

Kudla was named first-team All-Big Ten and Ohio State’s most valuable player on defense in 2005. In his final college game, he set a Fiesta Bowl record with three sacks to help the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame. He finished his college career with 91 tackles and 14.5 sacks. Kudla was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent but was released in 2006.
