Mahoning edges Trumbull in Jack Arvin Classic

CANFIELD — The wheels of Valley Christian’s state track champion Jamynk Jackson carried the Mahoning All-Stars to a 12-7 win over Trumbull in the 34th annual Jack Arvin All-Star Football Classic on Thursday at Canfield High School.

The game featured top recently-graduated seniors from schools in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

“This has been a great time to be able to compete with other top players,” Springfield Brandon Walters said. “It was nice to go out on a good note and get a win in my last high school game.”

Jackson’s 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the difference putting the Mahoning stars up 12-7 after falling behind on the previous play.

Jackson finished the night with 62 yards and a touchdown receiving yards and 8 yards rushing.

Liberty’s Dra Rushton 2-yard run put the Trumbull stars ahead momentarily with 8:58 left in the fourth quarter before the Jackson return.

The offenses got their chances to score in the first half but failed to score by ways of turnover.

Trumbull got to Mahoning’s 6-yard line before Springfield’s Walters’ intercepted the ball with only 49 seconds left in the second quarter.

“That was an exciting moment for me,” Walters said.

Ursuline’s Joe Floyd fumbled the ball on Mahoning side of the field for Trumbull’s Drew Munno from Lakeview to recover.

Mahoning started the second half with a time consuming possesion that ended up in a 40 yard touchdown reception for Jackson. This capped off a nine-play, 78-yard drive that lasted 7:11.

Floyd led Mahoning in rushing with 30 yards on seven carries. Brookfield’s Alex Clark led Trumbull in rushing with 111 yards on 18 carries.

The air game was the key for the Mahoning stars as Boardman’s Domonhic Jones passed for 111 yards.
