Cline gets Golden Bears going against rivals

WEIRTON — Junior Oak Glen right hander Josh Cline yielded just one hit in six innings of work to shut down county rival Weir High 5-0 Wednesday evening at Edwin J. Bowman field.

“Our team showed up today ready to play,” Oak Glen coach TJ Miller said. “This is a game we always get up for. It’s a county rivalry. It gets chippy. The kids know each other. This is a great win for us. Josh was lights out. I could not ask anything more of him. He commanded the game well, and we played good defense behind him.”

Cline struck out five and helped his own cause with an RBI at the plate, but he had to work around several baserunners as he walked three and hit four Red Riders (Chris Gillette got plunked three times). Every time, though, he recovered and got the needed outs.

“I had a couple bad innings, but I worked through it,” Cline said. “As I get older I try to worry about (baserunners) less and less, but they’re still obviously in the back of your mind. If you focus on the batter, you have more success. It’s frustrating to walk guys, but if you come back and get the next guy out, it kind of evens out. You have to have a short memory.”

Beating his friends is something cool for Cline.

“We’re all friends,” he said. “We all grew up playing baseball together. It’s a good feeling. We know they are going to be eager when they come to out field.”

Weir (2-7) left seven men on base and never got the clutch hit it desperately needed.

“We struck out a lot and looked at a lot of fastballs,” Weir coach Jason Angle said. “We struggled offensively for seven innings. We struck out looking way too much, and there’s no excuse for that. We did not do the things that we had been doing.”

Cline’s no-hit bid was broken up with two outs in the bottom of the fifth on a ground ball that found a gap off the bat of Sebastian Spencer. He then issued a pair of free passes to load the bases. He got Reed Hoover to ground out to get out of the jam before working a 1-2-3 sixth to wrap up what ended up being his second win this season.

Tyler Komorowski overcame a two-run first inning to go 5 2/3 for the Red Riders, finishing with three runs allowed (two earned) on four hits and eight strikeouts. The run support never came, though.

“Tyler pitched really well,” Angle said. “It’s disappointing because we did not give him any support. When you don’t get your ace any run support, you’ve got an issue.”

Cline put the Golden bears on the board with a one out RBI double that scored Michael Lemley. Blake Almo came home on Garrett Brewer’s sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

It remained 2-0 until the top of the fourth when Bryson Walls brought home Cline, who reached on an error, with an RBI single.

Jackson Chaney added to the lead with two outs in the fifth with a two-run single after the second of two errors in the inning by the Red Riders extended the inning. Cody Tate, who replaced Komorowski, struck out two and walked two in the final 1 1/3 innings.

Kaleb Dailey pitched the seventh for the Golden Bears and made quick work of it, striking out the side to seal the victory.

Both teams are back in action today. Weir faces Berkley Springs at Washington Wild Things Park at 4 p.m. Oak Glen travels to face Toronto at 5 p.m.
