Four Beavers, one Potter off to Columbus
CLAYMONT–Beaver Local saw four wrestlers and East Liverpool saw one punch tickets to the state tournament following action at the Div. II district tournament at Claymont High School on Saturday.
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the 81st individual state wrestling tournament set for March 8-10 at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University.
“I’m proud of the way our kids competed this weekend,” Beaver Local coach Jordan Williams said. “We won tight matches and a lot of our guys gave themselves great opportunities to get to the state tournament. It went great for us at some weights and other weights we had some guys who wrestled a great tournament but lost tight matches and missed that opportunity. I’m proud of them they competed hard and represented Beaver Local Wrestling the right way. We have a lot of kids with really bright futures.”
Beaver Local’s Cole McComas (113) will make his second trip to state after coming in first place with a 8-4 decision over Steubenville’s Peyton Blasko. Skyler Lasure (Beaver) will also return to Columbus with a runner-up finish after losing a 2-0 decision to Jacson Muldrew of Steubenville in the final. Beau Smith (145) makes his third trip to state with a fourth place finish. Jared Wright (152) finished in fourth place after losing a 7-4 decision to Jarrett Munyan of Sheridan.
“The state tournament means everything to Beaver Local Wrestling and this community,” Williams said. “Our guys work all year for this moment. Our four qualifiers will be ready, they have done the work, and already competed against some of the the better competition in the state. More important they are just excited to wrestle great competition and represent this program, community, and their teammates.”
East Liverpool’s Howard Williams (106) finished in third place after beating Michael Petrella of Hartley with a 2-0 decision.
Minerva sends two wrestlers to state with Ethan Meuller (126) finishing in fourth place after getting pinned by Dalton Burcher of Indian Valley in 2:34. Travis Kuttler (285) took a third place finish after beating Lyle Clark of Claymont with a 6-3 decision.
ALLIANCE–The West Branch wrestling team will have two represenatives in Columbus after advancing through the Division II district wrestling tournamnet on Saturday.
Christian Wayt (113) will make his return trip to state after winning a 5-3 decision over Ryan Jakubiak of Louisville in the finals. Freshman Kenny Marra (182) advances to state after a fourth place finish after getting pinned by Sam Eldridge of Chardon in 4:09.
GARFIELD HEIGHTS–Crestview will send two wrestlers to state while South Range sends one as they got through the Div. III wrestling tournament at Garfield Heights High School.
Crestview’s Andrew Hardenbrook (145) finished in third place after winning a 7-5 decision over Beau Lefever of Mapleton. Landon Talbert (195) took a fourth place finish after losing a 6-3 decision to Ryan Boyle of Rootstown.
South Range’s Kyle Keenan (113) will make his second trip to state after finising in fourth place after losing a 7-5 decision to Jackson Reineke of Hawken.
