Potters sweep rival Beavers
CALCUTTA–The East Liverpool basketball team had its two leading scorers on the court at the same time for the first time in more than a week but it was a first time starter who led the Potters in scoring in the season sweep win over Beaver Local on Thursday.
Nick Woodyard had 22 points to lead the Potters to a 60-45 win over their rivals.
“Nick did tremendous tonight,” East Liverpool coach Nate Conley said. “He was good on defense and offense all night. He won a lot of 50/50 balls and brought energy all night.”
Woodyard scored 18 of his 22 in the second half.
“I’ve worked hard all season,” Woodyard said. “We had a couple guys out but they were back today so it felt really good to know that I worked hard to get into the starting lineup.”
The Potters snapped a four game skid and improve to 8-8 on the season. Beaver Local drops to 5-10.
Tre Jackson returned to action on Tuesday against Salem after missing four straight games due to illness and Gabe Roach missed Tuesday’s game due to illness.
“Having Tre and Gabe back really helped us,” Conley said. “When they both play we are a good ball club but when they aren’t we can struggle.”
East Liverpool scored the first eight points of the game and made Beaver Local coach Jason Pacanowski take a timeout after a Tre Jackson fastbreak layup.
The Potters left the first frame with a 19-5 lead.
“I thought we played well in the first half and held on in the second half,” Conley said. “It’s always hard to come out here and play against a scrappy Beaver team. To come out here with a young team and get the season sweep was great.”
East Liverpool would have more of the same success in the second quarter taking a 29-16 lead in to the half.
“That first quarter was they key,” Beaver Local coach Jason Pacanowski said. “Every other quarter we either won or only lost by a few points and it was all close. They came out with a lot of energy and it just took us too long to get into a groove offensively.”
In the second half the Beavers would pull within nine after a Josh Hilditch basket at 39-30.
The Potters than outscored the Beavers 8-2 in the closing moments of the third taking a 47-32 lead into the final frame.
“We didn’t play that sharp in the second half but we got the road win and that will give us confidence going on,” Conley said.
The Potters forced the Beavers into 18 turnovers.
East Liverpool also saw contributions from Brennan O’Hara with 16 points and Roach had 12 points.
“Defensively I’m proud of my kids,” Pacanowski said. “Our gameplan was to face guard Roach and Jackson. We did that and held them to only 18 points combined but Woodyard went off on us. That hurt us.”
Beaver Local was led by Luke Chetock with 15 points and Tate Joseph had 10 points.
¯Beaver Local and East Liverpool return to action this Saturday at the Buckeye 8 Tournament at East Liverpool.
Beaver Local faces St. Clairsville and East Liverpool faces Harrison Central.
“It’s going to be tough,” Conley said. “Harrison Central is a dynamite team and they put the ball in the hoop. They get out in transition and we have to get ready for that.”
“We’ll rest up a little bit tomorrow and get right back at it,” Pacanowski said. “We have to forget about this game and be ready for St. Clairsville on Saturday.”
¯The Potters — who just finished a five games in seven day stretch — are looking at a three games in four days stretch next week including two matchups with Harrison Central. (Buckeye 8 championships vs. Harrison Central, Monday vs. Brooke, Tuesday vs. Harrison Central).
“It’s rough,” Woodyard said. “You have a lot of minor injuries that just keep dwelling but you work with it. We have a wonderful staff to help us through it.”
¯In jayvee action, Beaver Local won 39-37.
For Beaver Local, Jacob Kaine had 12 points.
For East Liverpool, Gannon Irvine had 16 points.
