Louisville blocks Beaver Local’s path

CANFIELD — The Beaver Local wrestling team came prepared for a battle and they got it when they faced Louisville in the regional semifinals of Division II state dual team tournament.

Beaver Local dropped out of the tournament with a 42-24 loss to the Leopards.

“We battled in places tonight,” Beaver Local coach Jordan Williams said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. You have got to give credit to Louisville. We have got to get back to the drawing board.

“They came in prepared and ready to go.”

Beaver Local came into the night short-handed with three wrestlers out with illness (Noah Smith, Zach Thomas, Sam Lowe).

“We wrestled earlier in the year and our heavyweight along with our 195-pound won,” Williams said. “That’s no excuse. Our kids are always prepared and it’s just time to regroup and look to the future.”

Beaver Local beat Louisville 33-23 in a tri-meet at Louisville earlier in the year.

Sam Lowe was replaced by Andrew Solansky in the 195-pound match losing a 6-4 decision to Louisville’s Zach Thatcher and Beaver’s Zach Thomas was replaced by Alec Post in the 285-pound match being pinned by Louisville’s Riley Brendle.

“I knew coming in we had some holes and we had to move around some kids,” Williams said. “We lost some big time matches when we needed the points.”

Louisville picked up two pins in the 106-pound match and 113-pound match.

Beaver Local’s Skyler Lasure picked up points late to beat Louisville’s Carter Mickley in a 7-6 decision.

The lone pin for the Beavers came from Logan Krulik in the 160-pound match against J.D. Spitaleri.

“When Krulik goes after it he goes after it and he battled for us,” Williams said. “Salsberry lost a tough match but he got after to it for six minutes.”

Salsberry dropped a 5-0 decision in the 126-pound match to Davin Rhoads.

Ohio Valley Athletic Conference runner-up Beau Smith lost a 12-9 decision to Louisville’s Jax Leonard in the 145-pound match.

Beaver’s Chad Mays pinned Lathan Larsen in the 182-pound match.

“Anytime you have an opportunity to wrestle such good competition in a great environment we like to take advantage of it,” Williams said. “I like this tourament format and we need to push harder every year.”

“Our kids thrive on the competition.”

In the other regional semifinal, top-seeded Canfield beat West Branch 49-22.

“The guys wrestled hard tonight,” West Branch coach Chris Dorris. “The score is something you don’t want to see but we came out and battled. We knew who we were going up against and where the big guns were at. I told them you know what lets get out here and see what can happen.”

Warriors to pick up wins included Thomas Caserta in the 132-pound match, Brock Wilke in the 145-pound match, Dylan Miller in the 152-pound match, Peter Biery in the 160-pound match and Kenny Marra in the 190-pound match.

“The guys didn’t back down from the fight and that’s what I am most proud of,” West Branch Chris Dorris.

The Beavers and Warriors return to action this weekend at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Tournament at Austintown Fitch

“It has been become a great tournament,” Williams said. “It’s become a measuring stick for what wrestlers are going to do in the sectionals and districts.”

“We are going to have to compete and win close matches.”

Canfield will also be at the EOWL tournament and Dorris welcomes the challenge again.

“We see them every year at the tournament,” Dorris said. “I would have no problem wrestling them tomorrow or next week. Bring on the challenge.”

¯ In the Dec. 8 tri-meet with Beaver, Louisville and Fitch, Zach Thomas beat Riley Brendle with a 3-2 decision in the 285-pound match and Sam Lowe beat Zach Thatcher in the 195-pound match with a 6-0 decision.

¯ Canfield won the final by rallying past Louisville 33-31. Canfield won five straight matches beginning at 160 pounds, four of them by pin.

¯ Canfield advances to the state tournament on Feb. 11 at St. John Arena on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus.
