Indians eject Vikings

SALINEVILLE — Southern had no trouble in dispatching Waterloo 71-43 in a Div. III sectional opener on Tuesday.

Cameron Grodhaus led Southern with 23 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Jayce Sloan added nine rebounds and five assists. Brady Tolson had 10 rebounds.

Jacob Joiner added 20 points to spark the 12-11 Indians who will travel to Mogadore on Friday for a sectional final.

WELLSVILLE — Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas’ run of five straight district titles came to an end in Wellsville on Tuesday night.

Eighth-seeded Wellsville outscored ninth-seeded St. Thomas a combined 37-22 in the second and fourth quarters to open Division IV sectional tournament play with a 65-53 win.

Garrett Scott had 18 points and five assists and Darien Suggs 18 points and four assists to lead the Tigers. Tristen Hinkle contributed 11 points and seven rebounds and Brandon Patterson nine points and five rebounds.

Wellsville improves to 16-7 and will play at top-seeded and second-ranked McDonald, the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference champion, at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Tigers rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the first quarter to take a 30-25 halftime lead. Both teams scored 17 points in the third quarter and Wellsville put the game away with 18 points in the final period.

Garrett Repp led the Knights with a game-high 25 points, 15 coming in the third quarter.

St. Thomas — winners of five straight district titles including the last two years at the Salem Division III tournament — finishes the season with a 4-19 record.
