Burgess takes 15th at district

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Minerva senior Katlyn Smalley rolled the high game with a 255 on her way to a Division II district title at Wabash Lanes on Saturday.

Smalley was the lone local individual to advance to the state bowling tournamnent.

She won the district title with a 641 series (201-255-185). Minerva sophomore Megan Keister, the sectional champion, finished second with a 609 (194-205-210).

It will be Smalley’s third trip to the state tournament after placing 39th last year and 88th as a freshman.

Beaver Local sophomore Alex Burgess tied for 15th place in the boys district standings with a 570 (171-187-212). He missed a state berth by 21 points.

The Division II boys state tournament will be held March 2 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl with the Division II girls state tournament on March 3.

The Minerva girls, who reached the state tournament three of the last four years, missed another by 64 pins Saturday.

Claymont won the girls district title with 3,888 to advance to state. Minerva placed second with 3,824.

Also for the Minerva girls, sophomore Skylar Timmerman was 13th (517), sophomore Carly Koontz was 15th (505); and sophomore Hannah Hawes was 18th (443).

District

AUSTINTOWN — A pair of local bowlers came up short of a trip to state in Division II district tournament action Saturday at Wedgewood Lanes.

Wellsville senior Charles Click finished in 23rd place in the boys standings with a total of 539 (221-147-171). Crestview senior Brittany Coblentz rolled a 442 (169-173-100) to come in 50th in the girls tournament.

Click and Coblentz were the only two local bowlers competing at Wedgewood Lanes on Saturday.

The Division II boys state tournament will be held March 2 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl with the Division II girls state tournament on March 3.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to state.

Fairport Harding won the girls team title with a total of 3,661. Garfield’s Tyler Lippert was the girls individual district champion with a total of 611.

On the boys side, Girard took first place in the team standings with a total of 3,821. Andrew Everly from Liberty took the boys district title with a total of 639.
