Beaver Local leads area wrestlers at EOWL Tournament

AUSTINTOWN — Beaver Local found the top of the podium twice to lead area wrestlers on Saturday during the final day of action at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament at Austintown Fitch.

Beaver’s Cole McComas, who was a champ at 106 pounds last year, won the 113 pound crown by topping Louisville’s Ryan Jakubiak 5-4 in the final.

Beaver’s Skyler Lasure vaulted to the top of the 132-pound class with an 8-4 win over Jefferson’s Joshua Baitt in the final.

“I liked the way our kids competed all weekend,” Beaver Local coach Jordan Williams said. “Our kids battled and won tight matches. We came in with some kids out due to illness, and needed everyone to contribute. Our kids responded, handled adversity and found ways to win big matches.”

Whereas area wrestlers won five weight classes last season, the Beaver Local wins were the only ones this time around.

“This tournament is a good measuring stick of what you are going to see in the postseason,” Williams said. “We have some areas to improve and we are going to look to do that over the next few weeks, I like the direction we are headed.”

West Branch only advanced one wrestler to the final — Dylan Miller at 152.

Crestview had a runner-up in Landon Talbert at 195.

Beaver Local also posted a runner-up at 145 in Beau Smith.

Canfield came out on top in the team standings with 231 1/2 points. Fitch was second with 211 and Beaver Local checked in at third with 178 1/2. West Branch was sixth with 156 1/2 points. Crestview was ninth with 105 points. Columbiana was 20th with 36 1/2 points. South Range was 22nd with 33 1/2 points and Salem finished 25th with 20 1/2 points. Wellsville had two points to finish 27th.

Beaver Local is at East Liverpool on Wednesday for a dual. Wrestling is slated to start at 6 p.m.
