Tigers work overtime

Wellsville’s Cameron Davis looks to pass as Beaver Local’s Jaden Kiddey defends on Tuesday.

CALCUTTA — Wellsville’s boys basketball team survived a scare from a young Beaver Local team 61-58 in overtime on Tuesday night.

Wellsville improves to 7-3 on the season and Beaver falls to 3-5 on the year.

“We snuck through and stole one tonight,” Wellsville coach David “Bug” Thompson said. “We played terrible down the stretch when we had a chance to put it away earlier in the game.”

The game went into overtime when Beaver Local’s Zak Pappas and Wellsville’s Brandon Patterson traded layups in the final minute to leave the game deadlock at 51.

In overtime, Wellsville’s Darien Suggs put the team up 58-53 with a driving and one but the Beavers climbed back into the game when Luke Chetock hit a three pointer to make the game 59-58.

Wellsville’s Patterson made two free throws late to make the game 61-58 with four seconds remaining.

“When those critical times come at the end of the game you just have to make the shots,” Patterson said.

Beaver Local turned the ball over on the inbound play to give the Tigers the overtime victory.

“They fought back in this game and Beaver played a heck of a game,” Thompson said.

Wellsville went into the final quarter up 36-31 before the Beavers made a run and tied the game up at 38 early in the fourth quarter.

“They lose their composure when they get the lead,” Thompson said. “It’s like we go into panic mode and than they buckle down when its all or nothing.”

The Tigers were led by Cameron Davis who had 15 points and nine rebounds. Garrett Scott finished with 11 points.

Brandon Patterson and Darien Suggs each finished with 10 points for Wellsville.

“We rallied late in the second half and pulled out the win tonight,” Patterson said.

Wellsville forced Beaver Local into 16 turnovers compared to their six.

Beaver Local was led by Zak Pappas with 19 points.

“I’m proud of our guys tonight,” Beaver Local coach Jason Pacanowski said. “For the last few weeks we’ve been preaching about playing together as a team and tonight we did that.”

Luke Chetock finished with 11 points for the Beavers.

“We had our moments here and there but some things didn’t go our way,” Pacanowski said. “We are still learning about these end of game situations and we will get these eventually.”

“I have full faith in these guys but we are just learning to play together right now and we are going to continue to work on that.”

Beaver Local will travel to Indian Creek on Friday in Buckeye 8 action.

Wellsville will travel to Lisbon on Friday.
