Beavers have no trouble with Oak Glen

Beaver Local's Madison Cline looks to drive baseline past Oak Glen's Maggie Kovalcik on Thursday.

CALCUTTA– The Beaver Local girls basketball team got off to a slow start in the first half against Oak Glen but took care of business in the second on its way to a 60-33 win on Thursday night.

The Beavers are now 6-4 on the season.

“The kids like applying pressure defense and running out in transition,” Beaver Local coach Stephanie Coie said. “It starts with defense to get our scoring.”

The Beavers forced 36 Golden Bears turnovers.

“We were very sloppy,” Oak Glen coach John Leary said. “You are not going to win games turning the ball over as much as we did. A lot of our turnovers were unforced errors.”

Oak Glen drops to 4-7 on the season.

“Give credit to Beaver Local credit because they like to play pressure defense and get up in your face,” Leary said.

The Golden Bears trailed 20-15 in the second quarter before Beaver Local finished the half on a 9-1 run.

“That really hurt us,” Leary said. “They ran on us and we weren’t getting back fast enough. Beaver Local was outhustling us tonight and that’s what happens to an immature team.”

Beaver Local outscored Oak Glen 17-9 in both the second and third quarters of the game.

“We started putting a lot of ball pressure at the end of first half,” Coie said. “Jenna (Riccardo) and Madison Ours were doing a great job of anticipating to get us out in transition.”

Jenna Riccardo had 27 points to lead the Beavers in scoring.

“I think we played really well as a team,” Riccardo said. “Running the ball up and down the court which usually helps us. Our guards are good at creating pressure and helping us get out in transition.”

Riccardo had three layups in transition in the final two minutes of the first half.

“Pressure and transition is our style of basketball,” Coie said.

Kierra Taylor finished with 14 points for the Beavers and Madison Cline had seven points.

Emmy Severs led Oak Glen in scoring with 10 points. Alexa Andrews and Alayna Kranis each had eight points for the Golden Bears.

“We are a very young and have a lot of growing up to do,” Leary said. “Fortunately we can get back in the gym and work on our offense.”

Maggie Kovalcik had five steals for Oak Glen.

Oak Glen will host Brooke on Thursday.

Beaver Local will continue Buckeye 8 action when they host Indian Creek on Monday.

“I think we are doing well so far,” Riccardo said. “We still need to work on our rebounding but transition has helped us a lot this season.”

In jayvee action, Oak Glen won 39-20.

For Oak Glen, Jadyn Smith and Taylor Jackson each had seven points.

For Beaver Local, Riley Britt had seven points.
